The Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant, on which the safety of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant depends, has come under heavy shelling – IAEA
This has been reported by the IAEA.
The IAEA team at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant observed light smoke coming from the neighbouring thermal power station and heard sounds of military activity.
This incident is causing serious concern due to the condition of the single power line remaining at the ZNPP.
Over the past few weeks, it has failed several times, forcing the plant to switch entirely to emergency diesel generators to provide the power needed to cool the six reactors and prevent a nuclear accident.
The single power line currently remains connected.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has called for an immediate halt to the attack to avoid a prolonged loss of power at the nuclear facility.
As a reminder, on 3 June, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was left without external power supply for the 17th time following a drone strike on a substation on the opposite bank of the Dnipro. Emergency diesel generators took over the load, but the nuclear safety situation was once again put at risk.
