Trump warns Republicans against election defeat due to impeachment risk
U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly called on Republicans to ensure victory in the midterm congressional elections to be held in November 2026. According to him, if the Democrats lose control of Congress, they will use this as a pretext for a new impeachment. This was reported by The Public https://thepublic.info/ with reference to DW.
During a speech to Republican lawmakers in Washington, Trump said that the party must consolidate and win the election, otherwise political opponents will find a formal reason to remove him from office. He emphasised that such a threat is quite real, given previous experience.
The President called on his fellow party members to be more united in gender policy, healthcare and electoral reforms. He also emphasised the need to promote the administration's economic programme more actively, given voters' dissatisfaction with the rising cost of living.
At the same time, Trump acknowledged that historically, the party of the incumbent president often loses in midterm elections. It is this factor, he said, that is of greatest concern ahead of the 2026 campaign.
During his first presidential term from 2017 to 2021, Trump was twice impeached by the Democrats. He was accused of abuse of power and events related to the storming of the Capitol on 6 January 2021. In both cases, the Senate acquitted the president.
The elections on 3 November 2026 in the United States will see the entire House of Representatives and approximately one third of the Senate re-elected, as well as a number of federal and regional votes.
