Trump personally asked Xi Jinping to help stop the war in Ukraine during a meeting in Beijing
US President Donald Trump, during last month’s summit in Beijing, appealed to Chinese President Xi Jinping to help restart negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, according to the South China Morning Post.
According to sources familiar with the meeting, Trump stated that the negotiation process between Moscow and Kyiv had reached an impasse. He urged the Chinese leader to use Beijing’s influence over Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring him back to the negotiating table with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The publication’s sources note that Trump’s appeal reflects Washington’s desire to involve China in efforts to end the war, which remains one of the key foreign policy issues for the US administration.
The summit took place against a backdrop of reports of Ukrainian forces’ successes on the front line. According to a Reuters source within the Ukrainian military, the Russian army is in a state of exhaustion and is unable to make any breakthroughs.
It is also noted that last month Russia launched a large-scale strike on Ukrainian territory, deploying 600 drones and 90 missiles, including the ‘Oreshnik’ ballistic missile.
The report emphasises that negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv have effectively reached an impasse following direct talks in Istanbul in July 2025, which concluded without any agreement on a ceasefire.
Furthermore, Trump continues to urge the Ukrainian leadership to seek agreements with Russia. In March, he appealed to Volodymyr Zelenskyy to step up the negotiation process.
