Turkey is preparing for a possible visit by Donald Trump to the NATO summit
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has stated that preparations for the NATO summit are continuing, taking into account the possible visit of US President Donald Trump.
According to the head of Turkish diplomacy, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has spoken with the US leader on several occasions, and during these conversations Trump did not indicate any intention of withdrawing from the summit.
“At present, all our preparations for President Trump’s visit are continuing,” Fidan said.
The minister also noted that Turkey is looking forward to the July summit of leaders and defence ministers from NATO partner countries in the Indo-Pacific region, including Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.
According to him, Ankara is working on the event’s programme in collaboration with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed hope that the NATO summit, scheduled for 7–8 July in Turkey, would demonstrate the Alliance’s strength and unity.
Among the topics planned for discussion during the meeting is the US President’s attitude towards NATO.
After NATO allies failed to support the United States in the war against Iran, Donald Trump publicly questioned the need for the United States to adhere to collective defence provisions and stated that he was considering the possibility of the country withdrawing from NATO.
