In Kyiv, the National Police have arrested a "general" who demanded $15,000 in exchange for passing a medical examination
In Kyiv, operatives from the National Police’s Internal Security Department and investigators from the Shevchenkivskyi Police Department have exposed a local resident who was extorting money from a serviceman in exchange for a promise to resolve the issue of his medical fitness assessment.
According to the investigation, the man offered to arrange for the soldier to be declared unfit for service and removed from military records, as well as to facilitate unhindered travel abroad. To move around the city, he presented a fake membership card of a public organisation. The cost of such ‘services’ amounted to 15,000 dollars.
To appear credible, the suspect introduced himself as a major-general and showed photographs of himself in uniform and an ID card listing him as the head of internal security for a public organisation. He also claimed to have connections among staff at regional recruitment centres, the State Border Guard Service and other military units.
Law enforcement officers documented his activities and arrested him immediately after he received part of the agreed sum, amounting to $10,000.
During searches, photocopies and originals of summons forms, applications for membership of a public organisation, draft notes, cash, documents relating to conscripts and other material evidence were seized.
Investigators informed the suspect of the charges under Part 3 of Article 332 and Part 3 of Article 369-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. He faces up to nine years’ imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The Shevchenkivskyi District Prosecutor’s Office of Kyiv is overseeing the proceedings in the case.
