More than 140 flights have been delayed at Moscow airports following a drone attack
On 7 May, Moscow’s airports experienced widespread flight delays and cancellations. According to media reports, over 140 flights were delayed and a further 30 were cancelled.
The Mayor of Moscow stated that air defence forces had allegedly shot down over 30 drones heading towards the city. According to him, reports of downed drones began to emerge around 3 am, and emergency services are working at the crash sites.
Following the attack, restrictions on aircraft arrivals and departures were introduced at Moscow’s airports. In particular, Vnukovo Airport suspended operations entirely following a notice from Rosaviatsiya, which was received at 1:41 am Moscow time.
Similar restrictions have been introduced at Sheremetyevo. There, the airport was operating under special arrangements, with the reason given being the introduction of the ‘Covor’ regime.
According to media reports, the most delays were recorded at Vnukovo, where 59 flights were delayed, and at Sheremetyevo, where 39 flights were delayed. At Domodedovo, eight flights were awaiting departure since the start of the day.
In total, the number of delayed flights at Moscow’s aviation hub exceeded 100, and airlines were forced to cancel more than 20 flights.
