A spill of sunflower oil was reported at the port of Chornomorsk following shelling
The shelling of the town of Chornomorsk has damaged the infrastructure of the Chornomorsk commercial seaport. A 6,000-tonne sunflower oil tank was destroyed in the fire, according to the State Environmental Inspection of the South-Western District.
Services at the Chornomorsk branch of the State Enterprise “AMPU” reported that the consequences of the accident had been swiftly contained. Barriers were erected on the site to prevent the spill from spreading, and the storm drains were blocked to prevent product residues from entering the aquatic environment.
During an inspection of the site, state inspectors did not detect any soil contamination, as the area has a concrete surface. However, an oil spill into the port’s waters was confirmed.
A slick approximately 400 by 200 metres in size formed on the water’s surface. Boom barriers were deployed to contain it.
The inspection team took samples of seawater for laboratory analysis. Once the results are received, the level of contamination will be determined and a calculation of the damages will be prepared.
A final assessment of the damage to the marine environment will be carried out once all the data has been received.
According to the Odesa Regional Environmental Inspectorate, sunflower oil from a damaged tank has entered the sea. “At the same time, an oil leak into the port’s water area has been identified,” the statement said.
On the night of 27 April, Russian drones launched a massive attack on Odesa. According to Oleg Kipper, head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, 14 people were injured, including two children. High-rise residential buildings and private homes were damaged.
