157kg of heroin hidden in marble tiles seized in Georgia
In Georgia, law enforcement officers have prevented an attempt to import a large consignment of heroin weighing 157 kilograms. The estimated value of the drugs is about 50 million GEL, which is equivalent to about 18.5 million USD. This was reported by The Public with reference to Newsgeorgia.
According to the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs, the banned substance was found in a truck entering the country through the Red Bridge customs checkpoint on the border with Azerbaijan. The heroin was carefully hidden in marble slabs, making it difficult to detect.
A citizen of Iran, who, according to preliminary data, was driving the truck, was detained on suspicion of smuggling and storing drugs on a particularly large scale. The investigation is identifying other possible participants in the criminal scheme.
The Georgian Revenue Service stressed that the country will not allow its territory to become a transit corridor for drug trafficking and will continue to apply enhanced control of high-risk cargoes.
