Ukraine is preparing for new fuel standards involving bioethanol
This was reported by the press office of the Ministry of Economy.
Key issues regarding the transition to new environmental standards were discussed during a round-table meeting at the ministry.
According to Deputy Minister Taras Vysotskyi, the changes will not only concern the mandatory biofuel content in petrol.
“It is not just about the mandatory biofuel content in petrol, but also about creating an effective quality control system for such fuel. We need to update standards, testing methods and inspection approaches,” he noted.
He added that the changes are also part of Ukraine’s fulfilment of its European integration commitments, particularly regarding the implementation of the RED-II and RED-III directives.
During the discussion, participants considered:
- updating technical regulations for petrol and diesel fuel;
- the implementation of European standards EN 228 and EN 590;
- the gradual phasing out of the outdated Euro 3 and Euro 4 environmental standards;
- preparing laboratories and monitoring systems to work with fuel containing bioethanol.
Particular attention was paid to the implementation of the technical regulation on alternative motor fuels, which regulates the use of fuel with a higher alcohol content – from 10% to 50%.
Participants also supported the transition to the European fuel classification system instead of the Soviet A-80 and A-92 designations.
At the same time, for diesel fuel, there are plans to retain control of cloud point indicators, taking into account Ukraine’s climatic conditions.
