Ukraine is proposing an ‘airport truce’ with Russia and is counting on EU support
This was stated by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga in comments to Politico.
“We probably need a new role for Europe in our peace efforts. Perhaps we will try to secure a so-called airport truce,” Sibiga noted.
The proposal would require the parties to refrain from striking airports. Sybiga believes that Putin may agree to such a deal, as Russian airports, including Sheremetyevo in Moscow and Pulkovo in St Petersburg, are becoming increasingly vulnerable to Ukrainian long-range strikes.
“Perhaps our European allies, by setting up a platform or a special group, could discuss [an ‘airport truce’],” Sibiga said, adding that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had already discussed this idea with some European leaders.
At the same time, the Foreign Minister stressed that Ukraine is not proposing that Europe replace the US in the negotiations. According to him, this should be a complementary approach, not an alternative one.
