Ukraine does not support the possible nomination of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as the European Union’s negotiator with Russia. Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga stated that such a candidate is unacceptable to Ukraine.

Andriy Sibiga made this statement ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on 11 May, according to *Ukrainska Pravda*.

Ukraine opposes the nomination of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as the European Union’s negotiator with Russia.

This was stated by Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga before the start of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on 11 May.

“No, we do not support it. We definitely do not support such a candidate,” Sybiha said.

He added that there are “many other worthy leaders” who could serve as the EU’s negotiator.

Earlier, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, also stated that Schröder should not be appointed as the EU’s negotiator on ending the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Kallas noted that Schröder is effectively a lobbyist for Russian state-owned companies.

Official Berlin also rejects Vladimir Putin’s proposal regarding Schröder as a possible EU negotiator with Russia.

In Germany, this idea is seen as an attempt to sow division in Europe and among German politicians.

Gerhard Schröder is 82 years old. He was Chancellor of Germany from 1998 to 2005.

Schröder also led the Social Democratic Party of Germany from 1999 to 2004.

For many years, he has been criticised for his friendly relations with Russia and his work for Russian energy companies.

As reported by ThePublic, Schröder did not hand over documents regarding his contacts with Putin to the Bundestag
