Ukrainian drones attacked the Kapustin Yar training ground, from where Russia launches Oreshnik missiles.
On Saturday, 17 January, Ukrainian drones attacked the 4th State Central Inter-Service Training Ground Kapustin Yar in the Astrakhan region of Russia. This was reported by Russian monitoring Telegram channels. Air defence systems were operating in the area of the facility.
The Kapustin Yar training ground is of strategic importance to the Russian military-industrial complex. It is actively used for testing and launching Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missiles, as well as short- and medium-range missiles, cruise missiles, air defence systems and S-400 launchers.
It was from this test site that Russia launched an Oreshnik missile strike on the Lviv region on 8 January. The explosion damaged infrastructure and the shock wave temporarily disrupted gas supplies. Earlier, on 21 November 2024, missiles from Kapustin Yar were also used in an attack on the Dnipro area.
According to some reports, drones may have hit the test building at the training ground during the attack. The Russian side has not released any official information about the extent of the damage.
This is not the first strike on this facility. In July 2024, Ukrainian drones already attacked Kapustin Yar, damaging several buildings on the training ground.
