US urges Ukraine and the EU to ease restrictions on Belarusian fertilisers – Bloomberg
This is according to Bloomberg, citing sources.
The product in question is potassium carbonate – one of Belarus’s key export commodities, which provided significant foreign exchange earnings for the country prior to the imposition of Western sanctions.
According to the agency, the US had already partially eased its own restrictions on Belarusian fertilisers earlier this year. This was part of an agreement following which Alexander Lukashenko’s regime released hundreds of political prisoners.
However, the impact of this decision is limited by European Union sanctions, which prevent Belarus from using traditional export routes via the Baltic Sea.
Belarusian fertiliser exports are now largely dependent on Russian ports and rail infrastructure.
According to Bloomberg sources, the administration of US President Donald Trump believes that easing sanctions could help improve relations with Minsk and reduce Belarus’s dependence on Russia.
