One of the most wanted mafia figures has been arrested in Italy
Italian police have arrested one of the country’s most dangerous fugitives, Roberto Mazzarella, who was wanted on suspicion of murder. The arrest took place on Friday evening on the Amalfi Coast, according to The Guardian.
Roberto, 48, was the head of the Mazzarella clan, part of the Neapolitan criminal organisation the Camorra. He had been on the run since 28 January 2025, when he was due to be arrested on suspicion of the murder of Antonio Maione, committed in 2000 in the San Giovanni Teduccio district.
The arrest took place in the town of Vietri sul Mare in the province of Salerno. At the time of the raid, he was staying in a luxury villa costing around €1,000 per night with his wife and two children. According to police, he did not resist arrest during the operation.
The operation was carried out by units of the Carabinieri, the Italian Air Force and the Salerno Coast Guard, which monitored the waters. During the search, law enforcement officers seized €20,000 in cash, three expensive watches, mobile phones and forged documents.
Roberto Mazzarella was fourth on the Italian Ministry of the Interior’s list of most dangerous fugitives. The Mazzarella clan controls a significant portion of smuggling and drug trafficking in Naples, and is also involved in counterfeiting and money laundering in Milan and the north of the country.
The Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, described the operation as an investigative success and the result of the persistent work of law enforcement officers. According to him, this reaffirms the state’s presence and restores a sense of security among citizens.
Chiara Colosimo, chair of the parliamentary anti-mafia commission, expressed her satisfaction with the results of the operation. Pina Picierno, Vice-President of the European Parliament, described the arrest as a major victory for the state in the fight against the mafia.
