US Vice-President J.D. Vance has stated that he regards the decision to halt funding for arms purchases for Ukraine as one of the current administration’s achievements. He also noted that the United States has withdrawn from this programme.

The Vice President of the United States, J.D. Vance, stated during a Turning Point USA event at the University of Georgia that he was proud of the decision to halt US funding for arms purchases for Ukraine.

According to him, the US is no longer purchasing weapons for Ukraine or sending them there. He added that European countries can continue to make purchases independently.

“One of the things I am most proud of during this administration is that we told Europe: ‘If you want to buy weapons, you can, but the US is no longer buying weapons or sending them to Ukraine. We have simply withdrawn from this matter,’” said J.D. Vance.

He also recalled an incident during the election campaign in Ohio, when a voter of Ukrainian descent from Cleveland expressed disagreement with his position.

“Someone came up to me; he was an American of Ukrainian descent from Cleveland, Ohio. I was campaigning for a seat in the Senate, and there are many Americans of Ukrainian descent there. ... He probably didn’t vote for me after that conversation, but he sort of pointed his finger in my face, saying: ‘You need to support my country’,” Vance said.

One of the mechanisms for supplying Ukraine with weapons remains the PURL initiative. This is a joint programme between NATO countries, their partners and the US, which provides for the supply of American weapons to the Ukrainian Defence Forces at the expense of European states.

Under the programme, Ukraine draws up a list of priority requirements and submits it to its allies. The partners finance the procurement, after which the funds are transferred to a special NATO account, and the US carries out the deliveries.

The Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List agreement was concluded between the US and NATO on 14 July 2025.

J.D. Vance had also previously explained his support for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the elections, noting that Orbán is one of the few European leaders capable of standing up to the Brussels bureaucracy.

Furthermore, he stated that Donald Trump is seeking an end to the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine and the resumption of trade with Russia.
