The Verkhovna Rada has maintained the deferral from mobilisation for students aged 25 and over
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine did not support the abolition of deferral from mobilisation for students over the age of 25. Deputies considered the relevant amendment to draft law No. 13574 during a meeting on 15 January, according to RBC-Ukraine.
The amendment would have eliminated deferrals for individuals who enrolled in educational institutions after reaching the age of 25. However, the initiative did not receive the necessary number of votes: only 137 MPs voted in favour, 13 voted against, and 14 abstained.
Earlier, the head of the parliamentary committee on education, science and innovation, Serhiy Babak, noted that after the start of the full-scale war, some citizens used education as a way to avoid mobilisation. At the same time, he stressed that the law cannot restrict the right to education, although the issue of deferment may be subject to regulation.
According to Babak, the State Service for Quality Education has already conducted large-scale inspections, as a result of which almost 50,000 people were expelled from educational institutions due to formal enrolment without actual training.
Thus, as of now, the deferral from mobilisation for students aged 25+ remains in force, and the proposed changes have not been approved by parliament.
