Will Trump help the Iranian regime?
Discussions are underway in the US regarding the possible terms of an interim agreement with Iran, which could involve the lifting of mutual sanctions and further negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme.
This came to light after details emerged in the media regarding a so-called memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran, reports the Wall Street Journal.
According to the published information, the preliminary agreement could remain in force for 60 days. During this period, the parties are to continue negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and a possible easing of sanctions.
The report notes that the US and Iran may agree to lift the blockades, and Washington is also considering the possibility of financial concessions towards Tehran.
An American official stated that the Iranian side had allegedly given assurances of its readiness to include the disposal of enriched uranium stocks in the future final agreement. At the same time, Iranian representatives deny this.
The authors of the article highlight the risks of lifting pressure on Iran before its nuclear programme has actually been dismantled. The text notes that if the embargo is lifted and Iranian oil sales resume, the only remaining means of pressure on Tehran will be the threat of renewed war.
