Private military companies in Ukraine
Ukraine is already preparing the legal framework to recruit foreign nationals into the Ukrainian army through private military companies. The law could be passed as early as this year.

This was announced by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

According to him, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the intelligence services, the Ukrainian government and the team at the Office of the President are working on drafting legislation for private military companies.

“Our security exports – following this war and for veterans – must be a real business opportunity. It is right and fair that our state should continue to be a global player, so that Ukrainian soldiers can capitalise on the unprecedented experience gained through our defence,” says the President.

Zelenskyy emphasised that “leading world powers” are recruiting their citizens into private military companies, so it is important for Ukraine to “provide a state response to this niche” and meet the demand.

The Head of State also reported that Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko had briefed him on the preparation of amendments to a draft law that will regulate the circulation of civilian firearms.

“Ukraine needs a modern and robust law on civilian firearms that will protect unarmed citizens and effectively regulate the situation for those who own weapons,” Zelenskyy notes.
