11 May 2026: a church holiday, name day and folk traditions
On Monday, 11 May 2026, the Orthodox Church commemorates Saints Cyril and Methodius, Equal to the Apostles.
Cyril and Methodius are known as the brothers who brought enlightenment to the Slavs. They created the first Slavic alphabet, translated the Holy Scriptures and initiated the spread of education among the Slavic peoples.
Their work is also associated with the establishment of church schools and the spread of education.
In addition to the church holiday, 11 May is celebrated worldwide as World Technology Day and World Ego Awareness Day.
Name days on 11 May
Name days on 11 May are celebrated by Cyril, Methodius, Nicodemus, Sophronius, Herman, Michael, Alexander and Rostislav.
What not to do on 11 May
On the day honouring Cyril and Methodius, folk traditions advised against engaging in heavy physical labour.
It was also not recommended on 11 May to swim in bodies of water or start new projects if old ones were not yet completed.
According to superstition, one should not buy expensive items on this day, as they may quickly fall into disrepair.
It was also advised not to visit cemeteries, cut one’s hair or nails, argue, or give in to negative emotions.
A separate superstition concerned unmarried girls. They were advised not to clean or take out the rubbish, so as not to ‘sweep’ happiness out of the house.
These prohibitions are linked to ancient folk superstitions and the tradition of treating this holy day with respect.
What you can do on this day
The Day of Remembrance of Cyril and Methodius has traditionally been associated with spiritual peace, prayer and reflection.
On this day, one may visit a church, pray, and ask for wisdom, knowledge and support in important matters.
In folk tradition, 11 May was also associated with the healing power of nature.
It was believed that birch sap collected on this day possessed special power, and that the wind could ‘carry away’ illnesses.
Healers prepared potions from coltsfoot, nettles and plantain, believing in their healing power.
The day was also considered auspicious for reconciliation, good deeds and peaceful rest.
