On 13 July, according to the new church calendar, Orthodox Christians in Ukraine celebrate the Feast of the Archangel Gabriel — one of the most revered heavenly messengers. In the folk calendar, this day is known as ‘Summer Gabriel’ and is considered important for work, the harvest, prayer and good deeds.

On 13 July 2026, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Feast of the Archangel Gabriel. According to the Old Style calendar, this feast falls on 26 July.

In Christian tradition, the Archangel Gabriel is considered one of the seven archangels closest to God. He is known as the heavenly messenger and the guardian of divine mysteries.

According to the Holy Scriptures, it was the Archangel Gabriel who announced the birth of Jesus Christ to the Virgin Mary. He also informed the righteous Anna of the birth of the Most Holy Mother of God, warned Joseph of the danger posed by King Herod, and accompanied the Mother of God throughout her earthly life.

According to tradition, the Archangel Gabriel revealed to Moses the mystery of the creation of the world and helped him to write the Book of Genesis.

How the Archangel Gabriel is depicted

In icons, the Archangel Gabriel is often depicted holding a white lily or a branch of the Tree of Paradise. These are symbols of the Good News, purity and God’s message.

Sometimes he is shown holding a lamp with a lit candle or a mirror. These represent God’s wisdom, truth and the light of faith.

The Feast of the Synaxis of the Archangel Gabriel was established to commemorate the consecration of the church built in his honour in the 17th century in Constantinople.

What people pray for on 13 July

On the Feast of the Archangel Gabriel, the faithful pray for protection, peace in the family, the birth of children, healing from illness and guidance in important life decisions.

People also turn to the archangel for guidance on important life decisions.

They also turn to the archangel with requests to guide them onto the right path, protect them from evil, strengthen their faith and give them strength for their work.

According to the old Julian calendar, 13 July marks the Feast of the Twelve Apostles.

Why is the day called Gavrilo the Summer?

In the folk calendar, 13 July is known as Gavrilo the Summer. This day was associated with the start of the active harvest, when the ears of grain fill out and bend towards the ground.

In ancient times, people would go out into the fields in the morning, pray for a good harvest and ask the Archangel Gabriel to grant them the strength to gather the grain in good time.

Despite being a church holiday, the day was not considered a time for rest and idleness. On the contrary, work on 13 July held special significance. It was a popular belief that the Archangel Gabriel helps the hard-working, and that diligence on this day brings prosperity and a bountiful harvest.

On this day, it is worth saying a prayer, going to church, helping those in need, and doing a good deed.

Also, on 13 July, you can work in the fields or vegetable garden, tend to household chores and complete important tasks. It was believed that anyone who was not afraid of work on this day would have a happy and prosperous year.

On the feast day of the Archangel Gabriel, one must not quarrel, get angry, feel envious, lie, use foul language, spread gossip or show greed.

The main folk taboo of the day is that one must not be lazy or idle. According to popular belief, idleness on ‘Summer Gabriel’s Day’ can lead to a fruitless, difficult and unsuccessful year.

It was also advised not to borrow money or lend it to others on 13 July. People believed that this could bring financial difficulties. Old debts, on the other hand, should preferably be repaid.

One should not refuse to help someone who genuinely needs it. The day of the Archangel Gabriel was considered a time of charity, so indifference could lead to trouble.
