17 April 2026: which church holiday is it and what’s worth trying
On 17 April, according to the new church calendar, we commemorate Saint Simeon of Persia. According to church tradition, he was a man of deep faith and monastic life, led a Christian community, and suffered persecution for refusing to renounce his faith. Simeon, as the legends tell, did not waver even in the face of trial and torture, and accepted a martyr’s death.
On this same day, the Church honours Saint Akakios, Bishop of Melitene. In tradition, he is portrayed as a spiritual mentor who combined strict asceticism with care for others, supported the needy, and sought to reconcile those in conflict.
On this day, believers turn to the saints in prayer, asking for the strengthening of faith, fortitude and peace of mind.
What is and isn’t allowed
In folk tradition, 17 April is a day to honour bees and the work of beekeepers. It is often around this time that the new season begins in the apiaries, when the hives are brought out and set up after winter. It is considered a good omen to taste at least a little honey or add it to a dish – it is believed that this promotes health and boosts vitality.
The Church does not approve of quarrels, swearing, aggression, gossip or envy on this day. Furthermore, according to folk beliefs, one should not refuse to help others, nor should one harm other people, animals or bees.
Among the day’s omens are rain as a sign of a wet spring and a rainy summer, a large number of ears on the oat stalk as a harbinger of a good harvest of oats and barley, and the chirping of crickets as a sign of the true arrival of spring and the start of active field work.
As reported by ThePublic, from April 2026, the Ukrainian Red Cross introduced a new model of financial assistance for vulnerable groups. The organisation replaced general-purpose aid with targeted support for priority categories.
