Biden broke his silence and criticised Trump
TSN reports this, citing The New York Times.
Biden spoke at a Democratic Party dinner in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This speech was one of his most pointed public remarks since leaving office. According to the publication, Biden’s appearance came against the backdrop of his family becoming more visible in the media recently. At the same time, this has provoked a mixed reaction among some Democrats due to the ongoing debate surrounding the end of his presidency. During his speech, Biden focused on criticising Trump’s actions, particularly his decisions regarding state institutions and spending.
What Biden said about Trump
The former president described some of Trump’s initiatives as ‘vanity projects’. In particular, Biden criticised the idea of converting the East Room of the White House into a grand ballroom, comparing it to Versailles, and also mentioned plans for the Kennedy Centre and other facilities. Separately, the former president stated that he was outraged by decisions relating to those involved in the storming of the Capitol on 6 January 2021.
Biden recalled his warnings about democracy
During his speech, Biden returned to a theme he often raised during his presidency — the state of democracy in the US. He noted that he had previously been criticised for such statements.
“I was criticised when I was president for saying that our democracy was under threat. That was the closest thing to ‘I told you so’,” Biden said.
Journalists note that the former president’s speech was emotional and significantly more pointed than his previous addresses since leaving the White House.
The Biden family is back in the spotlight
Recently, members of the former president’s family have also stepped up their public activities. Jill Biden launched a book in which she described her own perspective on the end of her husband’s presidential term. This sparked debate among Democrats and former administration officials. The former president’s son, Hunter Biden, has also become more active on social media, commenting on political events. Furthermore, a spokesperson for Joe Biden has stated that the former president is working on his memoirs, though the publication date remains unknown.
