Cuba is stepping up security measures and civil defence preparations amid growing tensions in relations with the US. The country’s president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, stated that Cuba poses no threat to the United States and has no intention of attacking any state. At the same time, he emphasised that the country reserves the right to defend itself in the event of possible aggression. According to the Cuban leader, a military scenario involving the island could have serious consequences.
Cubans are being given instructions for emergencies
Against the backdrop of the authorities’ statements, the civil defence system has been stepped up in the country. Recommendations on how to act in crisis situations are being distributed to the population. In particular, citizens are advised to stock up on long-life food, drinking water, medicines and essential items. The country is also considering possible response scenarios in the event of military escalation or a tightening of the blockade. According to media reports, Cuba is simultaneously working to strengthen its defence capabilities, notably through the development of unmanned aerial systems.
What the US is saying
Washington states that it currently has no plans for a military operation against Cuba. At the same time, the US is continuing its policy of sanctions and diplomatic pressure on the Cuban authorities. The latest restrictions concern representatives of government bodies and specific areas of cooperation with the island. The Cuban authorities, for their part, state that the country has long been subject to economic restrictions, and that the domestic situation is complicated by energy problems. In Havana, they explain that it is precisely because of these factors that the state must be prepared for various scenarios.
