On 18 June, a further 552 bodies were returned to Ukraine from Russia. The Russians claim that they are Ukrainian soldiers.

This was reported by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

Investigators from law enforcement agencies, in conjunction with expert units from the Ministry of the Interior, will carry out forensic examinations of the bodies to identify them. During previous exchanges, it emerged that the Russians had also handed over the bodies of Russian military personnel to Ukraine.

Ihor Klymenko, the Minister of the Interior, explained that the process of identifying the bodies is complicated by their condition. Furthermore, the Russian Federation sometimes hands over the bodies of several people in a single package, whilst on other occasions experts find the remains of a single person in different packages or even at different stages of repatriation.
