Residents of Balashikha in the Moscow Region have complained about a dark film left on their cars, clothes and window sills after the rain. On social media, this is being linked to the fire at the Moscow oil refinery following a drone attack.

Residents of the Zheleznodorozhny neighbourhood in Balashikha, near Moscow, have reported the appearance of a dark film on cars, window sills and clothing after it rained. This has been reported by local Telegram channels and social media users.

According to eyewitnesses, the rainfall was accompanied by a smell of burning, and marks resembling petroleum products were left on various surfaces. Local residents have also posted photographs of black marks on cars, benches, window sills and other surfaces.

It is noted that during the rain, wind speeds were around 16 kilometres per hour. Under such conditions, smoke and combustion products could have spread in a north-easterly direction, where Balashikha is located.

The Moscow Department of Natural Resources and the ‘Mosekomonitoring’ service stated that no deterioration in air quality had been recorded in Moscow or the Moscow Region.

One of the possible causes of the haze is believed to be a fire at the Moscow Oil Refinery. On the morning of 18 June, the facility came under a drone attack for the second time that week.

Fires also broke out at the ‘Sadovod’ and ‘Belaya Dacha’ shopping centres.
