The cause of the large-scale emergency power cut in Georgia was the failure of the 500 kV ‘Imereti’ high-voltage power line. This disrupted the operation of the power system, leading to its complete collapse

This has been reported by SOVA, citing Levan Mebonia, director of the Ingur Hydroelectric Power Station.

What happened

According to Mebonia, the ‘Imereti’ power line is not under the jurisdiction of the Ingur Hydroelectric Power Station. Following its disconnection, the system became unstable, as it was this line that carried significant volumes of electricity from the station to the Zestafoni district.

Power engineers are currently gradually reconnecting the power units. Mebonia noted that power has already been restored, and the electricity supply is expected to be fully restored shortly.

Power supply has now been restored

According to the Georgian State Power System, as of 10.15 am, the power supply had been fully restored across the whole country. The emergency outage occurred at around 8.00 am.

This is the second major power failure in Georgia’s electricity grid in recent days. A similar blackout occurred on 24 July, when the entire country was also left without electricity.
