Almost half a million troops. British intelligence has released figures on Russian casualties in the war in Ukraine
This was stated by Anne Keist-Butler, Director of the UK’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), during her annual lecture, according to The Guardian.
According to her, nearly 500,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the start of the full-scale invasion. This is the first time a senior official has publicly confirmed the UK’s assessment of Russian losses in Ukraine.
Kist-Butler also stated that Russia is stepping up its hybrid activities against the UK and Europe. Despite this, she emphasised that British intelligence agencies are working with partners to mitigate threats from Russia.
In January 2026, the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washington estimated Russian losses at 1.2 million troops, of whom 325,000 were killed. The Centre stated at the time that no major power had suffered “even close to such a number of casualties or deaths since the Second World War”.
As a reminder, the UK previously imposed sanctions on a cryptocurrency network through which Russia had funneled $90 billion.
