An agreement on the establishment of a Special Tribunal on the aggression against Ukraine is to be signed in Chisinau
Iryna Mudra, Deputy Head of the Office of the President, has announced that today, 15 May, in Chișinău, 33 states and the European Union will sign an agreement establishing a Special Tribunal on the crime of aggression against Ukraine.
According to her, the signing will take place during the Council of Europe ministerial meeting.
“All legally binding decisions have been agreed, and tomorrow Ukraine, the European Union and more than 30 other states – currently 33 countries and the European Union – will sign an agreement on the practical launch of the Tribunal and the establishment of the so-called Steering Committee of the Tribunal,” said Mudra.
She noted that for Ukraine, it is important not only that Russia be politically condemned by international partners, but also that a mechanism be created to hold specific officials of the Russian Federation to account.
According to Mudra, the signing of the agreement will conclude the preparatory stage of establishing the tribunal and legally launch the process of forming the institution.
After that, the selection of judges, prosecutors, investigators and other staff will begin.
“In other words, if we are talking about the practical launch, when investigators will already be working and the prosecutor will be preparing the indictment, we expect this to happen by the end of 2027,” said the Deputy Head of the Office of the President.
