An explosion has occurred at the MOL plant — Hungary’s largest multinational oil and gas company. One person has died and several others have been seriously injured.

This was announced by the Hungarian Prime Minister, Péter Magyar.

According to him, one person has died and several others have suffered serious injuries.

Energy Minister István Kapitány, together with Zsolt Hernádi, the company’s chief executive officer, are heading to the scene in Tiszaújváros.

MOL itself has issued a statement: “An explosion occurred during the restart of the Olefin 1 plant at the MOL Petrolkémia site in Tiszaújváros. The fire has been brought under control by the fire service… Experts are investigating the circumstances of the accident.”

According to Telex, several fire engines are at the scene, and a mobile laboratory has also been dispatched there. Eyewitnesses also spotted a rescue service helicopter.

György Fülöp, mayor of Tiszaújváros, stated that there is currently no need for civil protection measures, and that the authorities are in constant contact with the heads of the disaster response service and MOL.

As a reminder, earlier in the Netherlands, an unknown person threw a firecracker inside the headquarters of the Prime Minister’s party
