Australia drew with Paraguay and qualified for the 2026 World Cup play-offs
The Australian and Paraguayan national teams played out a draw in their third-round Group D match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara ended goalless — 0–0.
Throughout the match, the Australians were the more attacking side. They had 12 shots on goal, five of which were on target. The Paraguayans had seven shots, two of which were on target. However, neither team managed to break the deadlock.
In the other Group D match of the third round, Turkey snatched a 3–2 victory over the USA in the dying seconds.
At the end of the group stage, the US team, with 6 points, having secured top spot in the group ahead of schedule, progressed to the round of 32. In the play-offs, the Americans will face Bosnia and Herzegovina, who finished third in Group B. The match will take place on 2 July at 03:00 Kyiv time.
Australia finished second with 4 points and qualified directly for the play-offs. Paraguay also picked up 4 points and remain in with a good chance of reaching the round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams.
Turkey, with 3 points, finished bottom of the group and have been eliminated from the tournament.
The 2026 World Cup runs from 11 June to 19 July in the USA, Mexico and Canada. This is the first World Cup to feature 48 national teams. All teams are divided into 12 groups of four. The top two teams from each group, plus the eight best third-placed teams, advance to the round of 16.
