The death toll from the earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to over 230. Thousands more are still missing
This is according to the Associated Press.
According to the minister, the death toll may rise. Thousands of people are currently missing, so rescue operations are continuing.
It should be noted that the earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck approximately 160 km west of the Venezuelan capital, Caracas. The quakes are described as among the strongest to hit the country in the last century.
The coastal region of La Guaira, north of the capital Caracas, suffered the most damage and the highest number of casualties. The country’s main airport is located there, and it has been closed due to significant damage.
“Families were putting up posters with photographs of their loved ones, whilst others were sharing lists of names as part of the search efforts. Venezuelans abroad found it difficult to get in touch with their relatives due to communication disruptions. In the centre of Caracas, hundreds of people spent the night in parks and car parks,” journalists report.
Leaders from Mexico, Qatar, Brazil, Spain, Portugal and Canada have announced that they will send aid shipments to Venezuela. In addition, rescue teams from Mexico, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic have arrived in the country.
Furthermore, the United States has pledged support for Venezuela. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who spoke with the country’s interim leader, Delcy Rodríguez, following the earthquake, stated that the US government would provide assistance ‘immediately’.
