Asia Under Water: Floods and Landslides Leave Thousands Affected and Hundreds Missing
As ThePublic.info reports, citing data published by The Guardian, the death toll from devastating floods and landslides in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand has surpassed 1,200 people, with more than 800 still missing. Intense monsoon rains that began last week caused rivers to overflow, destroyed infrastructure, and flooded entire towns across the region.
According to updated figures, the casualties include:
-
659 deaths in Indonesia,
-
390 in Sri Lanka,
-
181 in Thailand.
Indonesia has suffered the most severe impact. Rescue teams are struggling to reach several villages on Sumatra Island due to washed-out roads and collapsed bridges. In total, the disaster has affected over 3.2 million people, with 2,600 injured and more than 470 reported missing.
This year’s situation was worsened by a rare tropical storm that formed in the Strait of Malacca, significantly intensifying rainfall across the region.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is deploying rapid-response teams, emergency supplies, and enhanced epidemic surveillance to the affected areas amid concerns about infectious disease outbreaks and acute shortages of clean water.
