He’s afraid of looking heavier. Trump explained why he doesn’t wear a bulletproof vest, despite a series of assassination attempts
This is reported by France24 and Fox News.
Previously, the American media claimed that following the latest shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, which was presumably aimed at Trump himself, the White House was considering asking the president to wear a bulletproof vest.
However, he himself says he has not been asked about this, adding that “I don’t know if I can stand wearing something that looks 20 pounds heavier”.
Trump did, however, acknowledge that the bulletproof vest works, recalling the Secret Service agent who was wounded during the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.
‘To be honest, the vest did an incredible job, because it took a point-blank shot. He didn’t even want to go to hospital. We sent him there just in case… It was still a hit, but he didn’t want to go to hospital. […] But there was still tremendous force in that shot. It’s like getting hit by Mike Tyson,” said the US president.
Attacks on Trump: what is known
On 13 July 2024, Donald Trump was shot during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The bullet pierced the top of his ear, leaving a trickle of blood visible on the politician’s face.
The attacker killed one member of the crowd at the rally and seriously injured two others. The shooter himself was shot dead by a Secret Service agent.
The FBI stated that the shooting was being investigated as an attempted murder. According to investigators, the shooter was 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. His motives, as well as his political beliefs, remain unclear.
Two months later, on 15 September, a second assassination attempt was made on Trump whilst he was playing golf at his Trump International Golf Club. The shooter was spotted by one of the Secret Service agents. He saw the barrel of a rifle with a telescopic sight protruding from the golf course fence and ‘immediately engaged’ the man.
When the shooter was spotted, he attempted to flee in his black Nissan SUV. But he was caught and detained.
The man arrested was Ryan Wesley Ruth. He worked as a builder of affordable housing in Hawaii, posted on social media about politics and current events, occasionally criticising the former president, and expressed strong support for Ukraine.
In September 2025, a jury found Ruth guilty on all five criminal charges brought against him. Afterwards, the man attempted to stab himself with a pen – this left marks on his neck, but he was not injured.
