China has stepped up its activities near Taiwan: what is the reason?
This is according to Bloomberg.
China has stepped up activity near Taiwan
China’s Ministry of Transport has announced a ‘special operation to control maritime traffic’ in the waters east of Taiwan. Beijing stated that these actions are aimed at exercising “maritime administrative jurisdiction” and protecting China’s national interests. Maritime forces from Fujian, Guangdong and the East China Sea provinces have been deployed for the operation. Beijing’s decision was a reaction to talks between Japan and the Philippines regarding maritime borders and the deepening of defence cooperation. The Chinese side claimed that such actions allegedly violate its territorial sovereignty and maritime interests. Tensions rose following a meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The parties announced their intention to strengthen cooperation in the field of maritime security.
Earlier, the Philippines had stated that it could be drawn into a conflict over Taiwan due to the island’s proximity to the country. Japan also noted that a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan could provide grounds for Tokyo to respond.
