Will strict power cut schedules be introduced across Ukraine on 19 January?
On Monday, 19 January, power supply restrictions will be in effect in all regions of Ukraine. Emergency power cuts have already been introduced in some regions, while others have hourly schedules. The reasons for this are the consequences of massive Russian missile and drone attacks on energy infrastructure and a drop in air temperature, which has led to an increase in electricity consumption.
Why are restrictions being introduced?
According to the National Energy Company Ukrenergo, the power system is operating under conditions of power shortage due to damage to energy facilities. In some regions, emergency blackout schedules are being implemented, which means that the previously announced hourly schedules are temporarily not in effect.
Energy officials emphasise that if the situation stabilises, the emergency blackouts may be cancelled within 24 hours.
What restrictions will be in place in the regions
Kyiv and Kyiv region
Emergency (emergency) power cuts are in effect in the capital, and scheduled power cuts are temporarily not in effect.
In the Bucha district, they are gradually transitioning to hourly power cuts, while in the Boryspil and Brovary districts, emergency power cuts are continuing in some areas.
Sumy region
Emergency power cuts have been introduced in full. Previous schedules are not in effect. The reason is damage to the power system as a result of shelling.
Cherkasy region
Hourly power outage schedules (HPS) with clearly defined queues are in effect. The duration of power outages depends on the consumer group.
Zaporizhzhia region
Hourly power cuts are in effect, taking into account the time required for switching. The power may be cut off several times a day.
Mykolaiv region
Hourly power outage schedules will be in effect for all queues throughout the day.
Kharkiv region
From 00:00 to 24:00, hourly power cuts will be in effect due to the difficult situation in the integrated power system after shelling.
Odesa region
Schedules are being applied in the region where the state of the network allows. Emergency power cuts continue in Odesa, part of the Odesa district and some settlements.
Dnipropetrovsk region
The lights will be turned off up to four times a day according to hourly schedules.
Other regions
Schedules for power cuts or emergency restrictions will also apply in Lviv, Poltava, Rivne, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Chernivtsi, Chernihiv, Khmelnytskyi, Kirovohrad and a number of other regions.
How to find out your schedule
Energy companies urge you to check for the latest information only on the official resources of your region's power company — on the companies' websites or in their chatbots on Viber and Telegram. The time and scope of power cuts may change during the day.
Recommendations during power cuts
Experts advise:
-
not to turn on several powerful electrical appliances at the same time;
-
if possible, postpone energy-intensive processes until after 11 p.m.;
-
follow fire safety rules when using candles;
-
do not approach broken or sagging power lines.
Ukrenergo emphasises that economical consumption of electricity is critical for the stable operation of the power system in wartime.
