Why did Billie Eilish say she no longer feels safe in the US?
American singer Billie Eilish sharply criticised Donald Trump's administration during the Martin Luther King Jr. Beloved Community Award ceremony. She delivered her speech against the backdrop of a high-profile operation by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis, which resulted in the death of a civilian.
This was reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Eilish received the award for her Changemaker initiative. As part of her Hit Me Hard and Soft world tour, her fans purchased tickets with a charitable component, raising over $11.5 million in donations. The funds will go to non-profit organisations working in the areas of climate change, food insecurity and climate justice.
Speaking from the stage, the singer admitted that she felt uncomfortable receiving an award for environmental activism at a time when, in her words, violence against civilians is escalating in the country and around the world. Eilish stressed that protecting the environment and local communities is not a priority for the current administration, adding that many people find it difficult to feel safe even in their own homes and on the streets.
These statements were prompted by an incident in Minneapolis, where poet Renee Nicole McLean Good was fatally wounded during an ICE raid. The incident took place in a residential area near neighbourhoods with large migrant communities. According to the US Department of Homeland Security, several people tried to interfere with the agents' actions during the operation, and Good allegedly tried to run them over with her car, after which an ICE officer opened fire, explaining that it was self-defence.
Billy Eilish had previously responded publicly to the situation, posting on social media with sharp criticism of ICE and calls for the agency to be abolished. In response, Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Trisha McLaughlin said that the singer was allegedly ignoring video evidence which, according to the agency, showed obstruction of law enforcement and the use of a car as a weapon of attack.
Billie Eilish is known not only as a musical artist but also as an active social activist. She is the winner of nine Grammy Awards, two Oscars and Golden Globes for songs from the films No Time to Die and Barbie, as well as the youngest performer to receive all four major Grammy Awards in one year. After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Eilish, along with her brother Finneas O'Connell, publicly expressed her support for Ukrainians, joined the Stand Up For Ukraine campaign, and repeatedly demonstrated her solidarity with Ukraine during concerts.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Beloved Community Award is presented to individuals and organisations that demonstrate leadership and commitment to the principles of social justice established by Martin Luther King Jr.
