Why are reflective elements particularly important in winter?
In winter, when it gets dark early and weather conditions often impair visibility on the roads, pedestrian safety becomes particularly important. With this in mind, police officers in the Odessa district organised a special preventive event for children, dedicated to the rules of safe behaviour on the road.
Inspectors from the Educational Safety Service of the Odessa District Police Department No. 2 explained to young pedestrians that the use of reflective elements — flickers — on clothing, footwear or backpacks allows drivers to notice people on the road much earlier. Without such elements, drivers can only see pedestrians at close range, which significantly increases the risk of an accident.
Law enforcement officers also showed where it is best to place reflective stickers so that they are most effective, and gave real examples of when reflectors helped to avoid traffic accidents.
During the meeting, special attention was paid to the basic traffic rules for pedestrians: the need to walk on pavements or footpaths, keep to the right, and in their absence, move safely along the roadside or the edge of the carriageway towards oncoming traffic.
At the end of the event, the police officers gave the children reflective stickers and emphasised that the rule "be visible in the dark" is not a formality, but a simple and accessible way to take care of your own life and health.
