Deontay Wilder could be Oleksandr Usyk’s final opponent: details
This was announced by Eddie Hearn, chairman of the promotional company Matchroom Boxing.
According to Hearn, the parties have already reached an agreement in principle regarding the organisation of the fight. The announcement came shortly after Usyk relinquished his WBA, WBC and IBF titles, whilst retaining the option to stage high-profile non-title bouts.
As Boxing Scene notes, the Ukrainian aims to end his career after facing the last remaining elite fighter in the modern heavyweight division whom he has not yet faced in the ring. Wilder remains the only one of his generation’s leading heavyweights who has not yet faced Usyk.
The 40-year-old American has fought 50 professional bouts, winning 45 of them, 43 by knockout. The most famous bouts of his career were his three fights against Tyson Fury: the first ended in a draw, whilst the Briton won the next two.
Usyk’s list of most high-profile victories already includes fights against Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Daniel Dubois. If the bout with Wilder goes ahead, it could be the final fight of the Ukrainian’s professional career.
At present, the date and venue of the fight have not been officially announced.
