The second-largest oil refinery in Kirishi has suspended operations following a drone attack
Russia’s second-largest oil refinery in Kirishi has halted oil processing following a drone attack on 5 May. This was reported by two industry sources, according to Reuters.
According to them, three of the four primary oil refining units were damaged as a result of the strike. These units are crucial to the plant’s operations, and without them, the refinery cannot function.
The governor of the Leningrad Region stated that the facility, known as Kirishinefteorgsintez, had come under attack, and that a fire had broken out in the industrial zone of the city of Kirishi.
Sources noted that some auxiliary units were also damaged. It is difficult to estimate how long it will take to resume operations.
The facility is controlled by Surgutneftegaz, which has not commented on the situation.
The Security Service of Ukraine confirmed the strike on this facility.
The plant is located approximately 800 kilometres from the border with Ukraine and has already been targeted by drone attacks this year.
The plant has a capacity of around 20 million tonnes of oil per year, or approximately 400,000 barrels per day. In recent years, the plant has processed around 18 million tonnes annually, accounting for about 7 per cent of Russia’s total oil refining volume. It is one of the key suppliers of diesel fuel to the domestic market and for export.
