Energoatom has been granted a licence to operate a nuclear fuel storage facility for 100 years
This was reported by the press office of Energoatom.
The document formalises the facility’s transition from the commissioning phase to the final stage of the plant’s life cycle.
The granting of this licence completes a long-standing process of establishing an autonomous and safe national system for the management of highly radioactive materials.
The main prerequisite for the project’s implementation was the need to eliminate critical dependence on Russia’s specialised infrastructure.
Previously, Ukraine was forced to send spent fuel from its three domestic nuclear power plants to Russia every year, paying around $200 million for this.
The facility itself is designed to operate continuously for at least a century using proven American ‘dry’ storage technology from Holtec International.
“Operating the repository over the next century strengthens the energy independence of Ukrainian nuclear power stations, ensures the reliable isolation of spent fuel and guarantees the state significant financial benefits,” emphasised Pavlo Kovtoniuk, head of Energoatom.
The result of the CSFSF’s transition to permanent operation is the assurance of stable functioning of nine Ukrainian nuclear power units.
