Fico has asked Poland for permission to fly to Moscow via its airspace
This was announced by Maciej Wiewior, a spokesperson for the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement to the PAP news agency.
According to him, Slovakia’s request is currently being analysed. Prior to this, Fico complained that Lithuania and Latvia had refused to allow him to fly over their territory to Moscow. Subsequently, Estonia joined its neighbours’ decision, as it did last year.
The Estonian Foreign Ministry noted that no country can use Estonian airspace to strengthen ties with Russia at a time when the Russian Federation continues to violate international norms, commit aggression against Ukraine and threaten the security of the whole of Europe.
Despite the ban imposed by these countries, Fico said he would seek alternative routes to reach the Russian capital on 9 May.
As a reminder, an investigation into Prime Minister Robert Fico has previously been launched in Slovakia. The allegations relate to treason and other criminal offences.
