Finland is taking control of US arms supplies to Ukraine
Euronews has published details of the diplomatic review.
Finland’s concern stems from the possibility that the Pentagon might use resources vital to Ukraine for military operations in Iran. This concerns weapons procured through NATO’s ‘Priority Ukraine Requirements List’ (PURL) mechanism. Antti Hakkanen emphasised that Helsinki will closely monitor every step Washington takes in fulfilling the signed contracts, as European funds are intended specifically for the defence of Ukrainian airspace.
The situation has escalated due to US diplomatic pressure on its European allies. Secretary of State Marco Rubio hinted that further support for Ukraine could be at risk if Europe does not assist the Americans in securing the Strait of Hormuz. In effect, Washington is attempting to trade Kyiv’s security for NATO’s military involvement in a war with Iran. However, the Finnish leadership has already declared its categorical refusal to participate in operations in the Persian Gulf.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb emphasised that his country has no spare resources, as it is forced to defend a 1,350-kilometre border with Russia. Helsinki insists that a war in Iran is not part of NATO’s obligations and must not cause delays in the transfer of weapons to Ukraine. Finland’s position sends a clear signal to its allies: European aid to Kyiv must remain a priority regardless of any new global conflicts.
