Greece has decided to deploy a Patriot missile defence system and F-16 fighter jets to strengthen Bulgaria's security. This decision was made following an appeal from Sofia.

The Greek Ministry of Defence has announced that Athens will deploy a Patriot missile defence system and F-16 fighter jets to help Bulgaria counter possible attacks from Iran, Euractiv reports.

Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias said during a conversation with his Bulgarian counterpart Atanas Zapryanov that Greece would provide resources and personnel to protect Bulgaria at Sofia's request.

The Patriot battery is planned to be deployed in a suitable area in northern Greece. The system will provide anti-ballistic coverage for a significant part of Bulgarian territory.

In addition, a pair of F-16 fighter jets will be stationed at an airbase in northern Greece. Their task will be to provide additional protection for Bulgaria.

Bulgaria, a NATO member, has stated that it will not participate in the US and Israeli war against Iran.

The likelihood of a missile or drone attack on Bulgaria is considered low due to its considerable distance from Iran. At the same time, the presence of American fighter jets in the country as part of joint NATO exercises has caused concern among the population against the backdrop of Iranian attacks and threats against other states.

Greece has already deployed Patriot systems and F-16 fighter jets in Cyprus.
