Heavy rain has flooded Ternopil and Khmelnytskyi: what is known about the aftermath
Local media in Ternopil and Khmelnytskyi are reporting on the effects of the bad weather.
Which streets have been flooded in Ternopil
Heavy rain began in Ternopil after 7.00 pm. Within a short time, powerful torrents of water formed on some streets, forcing drivers to slow down and find safe alternative routes.
The situation was particularly difficult on Mykulynetska Street. Flooding was also reported on Chernivetska, Kvitka Tsisyk, Protasevycha and Hayova Streets, near the Zbarazh roundabout, the car market and the Central Market.
On Zluky Avenue, near ‘Universam’, trolleybuses came to a halt due to the bad weather. Fallen trees were reported on the road between Ternopil and Kremenets.
According to rescue services, as of 21:00, five private homes on Hayova Bichna Street had been flooded. Garages were flooded on Mykulynetska Street, and a private courtyard on Stadnykova Street.
On Yevhen Konovalets Street, rescue workers were pumping water out of a ground-floor flat and the surrounding area of a block of flats. On Fedkovych Street, water had entered the basement of an administrative building.
The aftermath of the downpour was also being dealt with in Kremenets and Vyshnivka. In Kremenets, on Dubenska Street, a private garden was flooded, whilst on Horbacha Street, the basement of a five-storey residential block was flooded. In Vyshnevka, water flooded the grounds of a private property.
Rescue workers and utility staff continued to pump out the water. The situation was described as under control.
The mayor of Ternopil, Serhiy Nadal, urged residents not to go out onto the streets or use their cars unless absolutely necessary. People were also asked not to approach damaged power lines.
What happened in Khmelnytskyi
In Khmelnytskyi, the storm drainage system was unable to cope with the peak flow of water. Significant flooding occurred on Zarichanska Street and at the junction of Prybuzka and Svobody Streets.
Strong currents of water hampered traffic on Stepan Bandera Street. On Soborna Street, between Podilska and Vaisera Streets, drivers also had to navigate a flooded section. Once the rain eased off, the water on this street began to recede rapidly.
On Ozerna Street, water was flowing between high-rise buildings towards parked cars. There were also reports of flooding inside one of the local hypermarkets.
As of the evening of 19 July, there had been no confirmed reports of fatalities or injuries resulting from the bad weather in Ternopil and Khmelnytskyi.
What will the weather be like on 20 July?
According to the weather forecast, unsettled weather will continue across Ukraine on 20 July. Short-lived showers and thunderstorms are expected in most regions, whilst hail and squalls with wind speeds of 15–20 metres per second are possible in some areas.
During heavy rain, drivers are advised not to attempt to drive through deep flooded areas. Vehicles should also not be left near trees, advertising structures or power lines.
