An explosion occurred in the town of Zlatopil in the Kharkiv region on the evening of 22 July — according to the police, three men were drinking alcohol and accidentally set off a grenade. They all died.

This was reported by the Kharkiv Regional Police and the Mine Action Coordination Centre.

In a video address, Zlatopol’s mayor, Mykola Baksheev, said that the explosion in the town was not linked to Russian shelling, but was the result of careless handling of explosives.

According to the investigation, three men were standing near a car and drinking alcohol. Eyewitnesses report that one of them handed his jacket to another; whilst checking the pocket, the latter discovered a grenade. As a result of their careless handling of the munition, they pulled out the safety pin, after which the explosion occurred.

Three men — two born in 2003 and one born in 1999 — died at the scene from their injuries. The explosion also damaged two cars. The police are investigating the explosion as an ‘accident’.

The Central Anti-Mine Centre emphasised that the level of mine danger in the Kharkiv region remains critically high.

Ukraine has agreed not to impose any new unscheduled expenditure on the Pension Fund in excess of the budgetary limit without prior consultation with the International Monetary Fund. This condition may complicate the introduction of new one-off payments, but does not cancel pensions or the annual indexation.
