A Kyiv resident demanded nearly half a million dollars from a businessman by staging a hunting accident.
In Kyiv, a local resident was charged with extorting a large sum of money from an acquaintance, an entrepreneur, by staging a story about an accidental killing during a hunt. This was reported by the press service of the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office.
According to the investigation, the man was invited on a hunting trip, where he was convinced that he had accidentally shot a person, mistaking them for an animal. After that, the suspect assured the "victim" that he could help resolve the situation and cover up the crime, keeping everything secret.
The cost of such "help" was estimated at $475,000. According to the perpetrator, the funds were to be transferred in instalments to various influential individuals. Negotiations to cover up the fictitious murder continued for a long time, but in the end, the man from whom the money was demanded turned to law enforcement.
The suspect was detained while receiving 50,000 US dollars. He is charged with extortion combined with threats of violence against the victim or his close relatives under Part 4 of Article 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
This article provides for imprisonment for a term of seven to twelve years with confiscation of property. The court imposed a preventive measure on the suspect in the form of round-the-clock house arrest.
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators from the Darnytskyi Police Department of the National Police in Kyiv, with operational support from the Security Service of Ukraine.
