The Liberal Party of Canada has backed the abolition of visas for Ukrainians
The convention of the Liberal Party of Canada, which formed the current government, backed a resolution to lift the visa requirement for Ukrainian citizens travelling to Canada for short stays.
The final document states that this applies to visits of up to 90 days within a six-month period, in line with the approach taken by Canada’s European partners.
At the same time, it proposes introducing an electronic entry permit for Ukrainians. This practice currently applies to citizens of European Union member states.
The resolution emphasises that this approach reaffirms Canada’s leadership and its moral obligation to support Ukraine and democratic values.
The authors of the initiative note that the abolition of the visa regime could contribute to Ukraine’s recovery, the development of trade, cultural and educational exchanges, and help reunite families.
The convention took place in Montreal and concluded on Sunday. Such gatherings are held every two years and determine the party’s priorities and development strategy.
The document also states that the Liberal Party had already supported the idea of a visa-free regime for Ukraine at its 2016 convention, but this has not yet been implemented. The final decision on the changes is to be made by the Canadian government.
In addition, delegates considered other initiatives, including the possible introduction of age restrictions on the use of social media and AI-powered chatbots for children and teenagers.
