Peter Jackson has announced the film *The Lord of the Rings: The Shadow of the Past*
This was revealed in an interview between Jackson and *The Late Show* host Stephen Colbert, which was posted on Warner Bros.’ social media channels.
Colbert, who is a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien, will write the screenplay for the film, tentatively titled ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Shadow of the Past’, together with his son, screenwriter Peter McGee. The film will adapt six chapters (from the third to the eighth) of “The Fellowship of the Ring” that were not included in Jackson’s 2001 adaptation.
According to Cobert, it will be “a standalone story that fits into the larger narrative”, and it will remain “completely faithful to the books, as well as the films that have already been made”.
This film will be the second announced project in this universe following *The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum*, which will be directed by Andy Serkis. The film is set for release in December 2027.
