Law enforcement agencies are switching to enhanced duty mode, increasing the number of night patrols and taking critical infrastructure facilities under protection amid problems with electricity supply.

In light of the emergency situation in the energy sector, the Ukrainian police are working in enhanced mode and increasing the number of patrols, particularly at night. This was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine on Telegram on 18 January.

The ministry noted that the main tasks of the police are to maintain public order, prevent theft and other offences, and prevent threats to people and critical infrastructure. In the event of a prolonged power outage, when stationary warning systems are not working, law enforcement officers additionally inform the population about air raid alerts.

Police officers also provide citizens with the necessary assistance and explain safety rules. The Ministry of Internal Affairs urged people not to leave their homes at night unless absolutely necessary and to carry identification documents with them.

The ministry also reminded that it is strictly forbidden to take photos or videos of air defence systems, critical infrastructure, military facilities, and other information important to national security. Espionage, collaboration, aiding an aggressor state, and unauthorised dissemination of information about the movement of military personnel, weapons and equipment are punishable by imprisonment for a term of 3 to 15 years.
