The iconic film and television actress passed away after a short illness, leaving behind a significant creative legacy.

Canadian-American actress Catherine O'Hara, best known to the general public for her role as Kevin's mother in the film Home Alone, died on Friday, 30 January 2026, at her home in Los Angeles. This was reported by the American publication Variety, citing the actress's manager.

O'Hara was 71 years old. According to her representative, her death followed a brief illness; no further details have been disclosed at this time.

The actress began her professional career in Canada, appearing in the sketch comedy Second City Television, for which she received her first Emmy Award from the American Television Academy (Television Emmy Awards). After her television success, she actively starred in films: After Hours (1985), Beetlejuice (1988) and both parts of Home Alone (1990, 1992), which have achieved cult status.

O'Hara enjoyed a new surge in popularity in her 60s thanks to her role as Moira Rose in the Canadian sitcom Schitt's Creek, produced by CBC, which earned her a second Emmy Award.

This success opened up new cinematic opportunities for the actress: in her later years, she appeared in the HBO drama series The Last of Us and the Apple TV+ series The Company.
